Nuclear Medicine scan involve injecting a small amount of radioactive material (radionuclide) linked to a special compound (pharmaceutical) to form a radiopharmaceutical. The radiopharmaceutical or tracer when injected will distribute in the body on a physiologic basis that may be altered by the presence of disease. Images are obtained by placing the patient in a special camera that detects the radiation and allows pictures to be made that reflect the distribution of the tracer within the body.

Nuclear Medicine procedures are safe for patients and it does not require anesthesia for the test to be done. Exposure to radio-activity is below the permissible limit.
