Nuclear Medicine scan involve injecting a small amount of radioactive material (radionuclide) linked to a special compound (pharmaceutical) to form a radiopharmaceutical. The radiopharmaceutical or tracer when injected will distribute in the body on a physiologic basis that may be altered by the presence of disease. Images are obtained by placing the patient in a special camera that detects the radiation and allows pictures to be made that reflect the distribution of the tracer within the body. |
