The department of nuclear medicine at Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research was established in 1990 and was the first center of its kind in Delhi in the private sector. Today it is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment - a variable angle dual head gamma camera (GE) interfaced with a sophisticated Genie image processing station and a single head SPECT Elscint Apex SP-4 gamma camera. These cameras provide high-resolution three-dimensional images that allow for accurate analysis of various scans. Modern equipment along with an experienced team of doctors and allied health professionals ensure world-class standards.
Scans
Sitaram Bhartia Institute is recognized as a leading center for stress thallium scans one of the most frequently performed tests in nuclear medicine. This test provides valuable information about functioning of the heart and helps assess the need for further interventions such as coronary angiography or bypass surgery. Other organs that are routinely assessed by nuclear scans in the department are the brain, thyroid, lungs, liver and bones. The department has conducted more than 25000 scans since its inception and is recognized by the International Atomic Energy Commission/WHO as a research and training center.
Non Imaging Tests
The department is equipped to measure the ability of the thyroid gland to take up iodine and the absolute glomerular filteration rate of kidneys using a Capnitech Thyroid Uptake System with a well counter
Radio Immuno Assays (RIA)
RIA is a sensitive technique for measuring the level of body hormones in the blood. Thyroid hormones (T3, T4, TSH), thyroid antibodies, insulin, growth hormone, FSH, LH and others are routinely measured using a 12-well RIA Stratec gamma counter.
Radioactive Treatment for Thyroid & Bone Metastases
Thyrotoxicosis and painful bone metastases are treated on an out-patient basis using various radioactive agents. There is a special isolation ward for treatment of Thyroid Cancer using high doses of I-131.
Bone Densitometry
Osteoporosis (porous bones) is a silent, generalized and disabling disease. Early detection is essential for reversing or slowing the process of bone mineral loss. Bone mineral density is measured in our department with a Lunar Achilles machine based on ultrasound technology. The testing procedure is simple, quick, painless and radiation-free.
