Urology

Urology is a sub-specialty of surgery that deals with disorders and abnormalities of the genitor-urinary system. Such disorders are common and can occur at any age from infancy to old age.

Pediatric Urology
Pediatric urological procedures for conditions such as hydronephrosis, hypospadius, and defective urethral valves are commonly carried out. Rare and more serious conditions such as exstrophy where the baby is born with a large opening in the lower abdomen can also be treated.

Urinary Stones
Stones in the kidneys and ureters are commonly seen in adults between the age of 20 to 50 years. Stones cause severe pain and can sometimes result in life-threatening complications. For large obstructive stones, the best treatment option is often PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithiasis) in which a skin incision is made under anesthesia and the stone is removed using specialized instruments. These endoscopic procedures are very patient-friendly and result in an early return to full activity. Our urologists have very large experience of this modality.

Prostate Enlargement
The prostate gland in the male urinary tract enlarges with age and frequently causes obstruction in the flow of urine. Early cases are treated with appropriate drugs but with passing time surgery often becomes necessary. The most commonly used procedure for surgery is TURP (transurethral resection of prostate) and is the gold standard world-wide.

Urological Cancers
Cancers of the kidney, bladder and particularly prostate are commonly seen. In fact, prostate cancer is the commonest cancer today. Many of these cancers are eminently curable if diagnosed early. Our department has considerable experience of surgical removal of these cancers, including nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy.

Female Urology

Urological procedures commonly carried out in women include those for stress incontinence and various types of fistulas.
