Respiratory Medicine Asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, fibrosis, and other chest diseases are treated by nationally renowned physicians at the Institute. Their reputation for diagnosing and managing difficult cases results in referrals from neighboring hospitals and requests for ICU consultations of critical patients in other institutions. Patient satisfaction is extremely high as a result of critical evaluation, sound judgment based on experience and current evidence, and sensitivity to psychosocial needs. In-house facilities such as laboratory investigations (including arterial blood gas analysis), x-ray, ultrasound, pulmonary function test, and exercise testing are available for diagnostic work up of patients. There is a close link with partner organizations for other investigations such as CT and MRI. Three intensive care beds for critically ill patients with facilities for monitoring and non-invasive and invasive assisted / controlled ventilation are available in the Institute. There is great emphasis is laid on rehabilitation of patients with chronic lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to enable them to best cope with their disability. Physicians spend time in educating patients with asthma about different aspects of monitoring and management. The department has eminent consultants, both of whom have served as head of the department of medicine at AIIMS. |
